Licensing and Registration FAQ

How do I register my program?
We've tried to make the registration process as simple as possible while maintaining security. The process is simple:
  1. Purchase your product (if upgrading, be sure to uninstall the old version first).
  2. A registration site account is created and a PID (Product ID) is generated for each license purchased.
  3. Log into your registration site account (http://register.paraben-forensics.com) and generate your license key file.
  4. Download and save that key file (key.lic) to the same directory that the program you are registering is installed to.
Of course, nothing is as simple as it should be. If you have any problems or questions, please review the following FAQs for the registration process.

What is a PID?
We assign a PID (Product ID) to every license we sell. The PID is proof of your license. We require your PID in order for you to register your product. We have created a registration site at http://register.paraben-forensics.com to allow you to register your product at any time. If someone else purchased your product and you are the end user, you can simply log in using your PID. If you purchased the product, your login information will have been e-mailed to you and your PIDs should be in your account.

PIDs for the latest versions of our software should have 8 groups of 4 alpha-numeric symbols such as 48Q1-F4A8-48A4-07FE-FF80-8D9B-AE81-F6C0. Any time you change out hardware for your machine, your hardware ID will change and you will need to get a new key file. That's why we've made is so easy for you to get key files instantly from our registration site.

Why aren’t all my products listed in my user profile on the registration Site?
If you created a shopping cart account but didn't purchase anything under that account, your registration site account will have no PIDs. There is also the possibility that you transferred your PIDs to another account. Lastly, you may have more than one account for your organization and the PIDs are under another account. If you cannot locate your PIDs, please contact us.

How do I transfer licenses from one user account to another?
There are two ways to have this done:
  1. The easiest way is to have the user you wish to transfer your license to log in using the PID that was provided on the orange card in the software case. You will then be asked for your username and password to transfer the PID to your account or you will have the option to create a new account.
  2. If the PID is not available, we would need an e-mail from the originating account holder authorizing us to make the transfer. The e-mail addresses of both accounts are required to make the transfer as well as any information about the original purchase that would make it easier to track down.
How do I update the e-mail address associated with my registration site account?
Log into your account and click on 'Account Info'. Update the e-mail address field and click 'Change'. Your account login will change to the new e-mail address and your password will remain the same.

Why isn’t my e-mail address accepted when I try to login to my user profile?
There are two possibilities for this. Your account was never set up or it was set up with an error in your e-mail address. If someone else purchased the software for you, you will need to log in using your PID and set up a new account.

Can you walk me through the registration process step-by-step?
Every license purchased will be assigned a PID on our registration site under the e-mail address used to purchase. If you purchased using a PO and don't know your login information, please contact us. Before you begin, please uninstall any previous versions of the software you are registering.

To login: Go to the following website: http://register.paraben-forensics.com.

You will have two login options:
  1. By e-mail address: This will also require a password, or
  2. By Product ID: The product ID is included with the software packaging. There should be an orange insert in the software case. If the product is an upgrade, it will be on a white label located on the back of the CD envelope. If there is no PID, you may have purchased the product before the launch of our registration site. Simply e-mail register@paraben.com to have your PID added to your account.
To download the product: You can download the latest version of the software right from your account. There is a “Download product” link next to each PID.

To download the key file: After logging in, you will see all available products for registration:
  1. Click on the Product ID for the program you wish to generate the key for. It will take you to a page that will ask you if you want a Hardware ID based key, or a Time based key (6 months).
  2. Download the latest version using the download link by the PID (the registration site will always have the most current version).
  3. Select your option and copy/paste the hardware ID from “Help” and “About” into the field if Hardware ID is chosen.
  4. You will also need to select either Lab or Mobile machine.
  5. Select “Activate”. You will then be taken to a screen which contains the license agreement.
  6. In order to continue, you must agree to the license agreement.
  7. Select “Activate”. The next page will tell you the key was activated successfully
  8. Select “Download”. A download dialog box will open asking you if you want to open or save the download
  9. Select “Save”. Save the file to the following folder: C:\Program Files\Paraben Corporation\[Application]; [Application] being the application you generated the key for.
If you are the end user but you did not purchase the program, you will either need the Product ID (PID) to register or you will need the original purchaser to call us at 801-796-0944 or e-mail register@paraben.com and ask that the license be transferred to your registration site account.

After I have added my license key file to the proper directory, I open the application and receive the following Error: “Your License Key File is Corrupted” what does this mean?
This is because the version of the software you have is different from the version the key was generated for. We recommend that you download the latest update of our software from your user profile and download the key as well. We also recommend that you first uninstall the version of software that you have on your machine, and remove everything except for any log files, or work spaces that you wish to keep from the program directory before installing the new version of the software.

When I start my program I get the following message, “Your trial period has ended, please register your product…”
If you are using the demo version of the software after 13 uses, or 30 days, you will get this message. Also, if you have purchased the product and have not registered it, this same message will appear and you will not be able to use the product until you do so. Please note that uninstalling the program and reinstalling will not give you another trial period and this is not version specific either.

When I try to register using my Product ID, I receive the following message: "PID format is not correct". The most likely reason for this is that you are using the Hardware ID rather than the product ID. You may also not have the most current version of the software.

What is the difference between my Hardware ID and my Product ID?
Your hardware ID is a unique ID that is generated based off of your computer’s hardware configuration. Any major changes to the computer’s hardware could cause your hardware ID to change, which will not allow you to open the program. If you have made changes to your computer and this occurs, please send an e-mail to register@paraben.com explaining the situation, and what your new hardware ID is, and we can reset your user licenses. You can find your Hardware ID in the Help and About menu of the application.

Your Product ID, or PID, is a unique number assigned to the software itself for identifying the product and matching it to a user. It may be found either in your user profile on the registration site, or on the insert that came with the CD. If you have upgraded the product it will be on the back of the CD sleeve.

When I start my program I get the following message, “This program has been locked to a specific machine…”
This means that the hardware ID that was created for the key does not match that of the machine it is installed on. Please make sure that the IDs are the same.

What is a Lab versus Mobile license?
Our licensing allows you to install our programs on two machines, one being the machine in your forensic lab (lab) and one on the machine that you take with you out into the field (mobile). The program may only be running on one of those machines at a time. In the registration page, this is more for your reference so as to keep track of which machine has which license and or hardware ID.

What is a Time Base key versus a Hardware ID based key?
As the hardware ID is the unique ID based off your hardware configuration, you may generate a key based off this ID which will be a permanent key as long as the hardware ID doesn't change. If you wipe your machine after an investigation, and reinstall everything, this ID may change at which point you will need to download a new key.

The time-based option does not require a hardware ID and so a backup of this key may be kept so after a reinstall, you need not download a new key. This key does expire every six months at which point a new key would need to be regenerated via our registration site.

Anytime you download a new key be it Hardware ID or Time base, you will want to make sure you download and install the latest version of our software to insure compatibility between the key and the application.
