GroupWise Settings

Unlike Exchange or Lotus Notes files, GroupWise databases are not stored in just one file. They are stored in a file hierarchy generally referred to as a post office. A post office can consist of a Single mailbox containing one user's information or any number of mailboxes for an entire network of users. One of the main reasons why GroupWise stores its information in this manner is to prevent user mailboxes and the subsequent mailbox from becoming extremely large. This in turn saves on disk space and increases the speed at which a client can access a message contained in the database.

When importing a GroupWise post office into Electronic Evidence Examiner, you will want to keep track of few folders, including their file hierarchy. The main file that Electronic Evidence Examiner opens is the ngwguard.db file. This file will point to all other database files. This is why Electronic Evidence Examiner will also need these files to be in the appropriate folders in order to have the capability of accessing them. The wphosts.db file contains the Address Book and all administrative information for the post office.

Besides the ngwguard.db and wphosts.db files, you will also need 3 other folders and their contents to be able to import each mailbox and the Emails for each user. The folders are "of users", "of msg", and "offiles". You can see a description of each of them below:

of users - This folder contains a separate database/Mailbox for each GroupWise user. It will also contain the title of each email message but it will not contain the actual message.

of msg - The actual messages for each user will be stored in this folder. Because of how GroupWise is set up, a message will only be set up once with the possibility of being sent to any number of recipients that are in the same mailbox.

offiles - This folder will store any part of the message that is over 2 KB in size including the recipient list or any attachments.

Other Problems:

The GroupWise post-office loads and there is only a single user with no messages - Missing, corrupt, or out of place "of user" folder and corresponding files.

The GroupWise post-office loads, multiple user's load, however one user has no messages/folders - Missing or corrupt user in the "of user" folder.

The GroupWise post-office loads, multiple user's load, however only the message tiles appear - Missing, corrupt, or out of place "of msg" folder.

The GroupWise post-office loads, multiple users load, messages appear, however some attachments and files are unavailable - Missing or corrupt "offiles" folder.

GroupWise settings are settings for opening databases created by GroupWise.

  • Map GroupWiseMessage ID to Internet Message ID: This option allows the user to show the Internet message ID instead of the GroupWise message ID.
  • Populate both send and received field: This option allows you to fill both send and received fields if one of them is empty (for example, if the send field is empty, it will be filled with the data from the received field and vice versa).
  • Use TEXT.htm attachment for HTML body: If this option is selected, the TEXT.htm attachment containing the message text will be created for those messages that have HTML bodies.
